Abstract

This research aims to explore the socio-economic lives of coastal fishermen in Kijang, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands Province, with a focus on the challenges, hopes and changes in their lives. Despite Indonesia's abundant marine potential, many fishermen in Kijang still live in poverty. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, through interviews and literature studies, to describe the daily activities of fishermen, the fishing gear used, as well as the marketing process of the catch. The results showed that fishermen in Kijang face various challenges, such as climate change, extreme weather, high fuel costs, and competition among fishermen. In addition, income instability and limited fishing technology also affect their welfare. The role of women in fishing families is also significant, with some women trying to increase family income through small businesses. The research also highlights the importance of government support, whether in the form of fuel subsidies, health insurance or marine environmental conservation programmes. Thus, this study provides insights into the complexity of fishers' socioeconomic lives, as well as policy recommendations to improve their welfare and maintain the sustainability of fisheries resources in coastal areas.
