Abstract
This research aims to analyze the novel Saman by Ayu Utami using the genetic structuralism approach according to Lucien Goldmann. This approach focuses on the relationship between the structure of literary works and social conditions, as well as the ideology behind their creation. This research explores how the novel Saman reflects the social, political and cultural dynamics of Indonesia at the end of the 20th century, by highlighting the ideological values reflected in the characters and storyline. Analysis shows that this novel does not only focus on the internal conflicts of the characters, but also depicts major changes in Indonesian society which are influenced by political and social transitions. The narrative structure in Saman is seen as a representation of a wider social structure, where each character acts as an individual who is connected to the social, cultural and political conditions that developed at that time. Through a genetic structuralism approach, this research reveals the relationship between literature and ideology, as well as the contribution of this novel in depicting complex and tension-filled social situations.
